Children aged 15 and under enter for free.

Adults 16 and older pay a $10 entrance fee. The National Park Service offers a Junior Ranger program to help kids engage with the history. Stop at the Visitor Center first to get them started.

What are the best parts of the fort for kids to explore?

The underground powder magazines and Cannon Row are highly interactive.

Kids enjoy walking through the dark, thick-walled brick rooms used to store ammunition. The site features various eras of military architecture. You will also see large concrete bunkers added during World War II.

Can children climb on the walls and cannons?

No. Climbing, sitting, or standing on the historic walls, mounds, and cannons is strictly prohibited.

This is a critical safety rule. Fort Moultrie is a preserved historical site, not a playground. Keep children away from large drop-offs on top of the gun batteries. Do not cross areas closed off by chains or barriers.

Is the terrain easy for kids to walk on?

The island itself is flat, but the fort has uneven historic surfaces.

You need comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes. The brick floors inside the powder magazines are uneven and can be damp. Watch your step as you move through the dark tunnels.
